Main spindle drives provide the process power for machine tools and production machines, field-oriented squirrel-cage induction motors are mostly used here. If the power-speed diagram has a wide-range characteristic, a large power stack is associated with it, which negatively affects the cost position. A more favorable motor-power stack allocation is possible if a winding changeover procedure is practiced. In addition to the established methods star-delta changeover and series-parallel changeover, there is a less-known method in which the stator winding is changed over to part-winding operation. The paper deals with the winding technology and circuit engineering as well as the simulation of the steady-state operation behavior of this further method.
