摘要

Metallography has played a prominent role in the broad field of component and material testing for 300 years. After a brief historical overview from the founding fathers of metallography to the present day, the possibilities of this discipline, which we now more generally call materialography, are explained. The focus is on developments of the last 20 years. This article also offers a brief glimpse into the future, where materialography may gain even greater relevance through automated microscopy and the support of analysis capabilities through artificial intelligence.
