<p>For the construction of the 7.4 km long Gloggnitz tunnel an intermediate access consisting of an 1.2 km long access tunnel and two shafts with a&#xa0;depth of 250 m are necessary to start the four tunnel drives from the shaft bottom. To install the necessary equipment for the start of the four tunnel drives two caverns each with a length of 200 m and a&#xa0;cross section of 210 m<sup>2</sup>/lfm were built. This contribution describes the backfilling works of the 85,000 m<sup>3</sup> of cavity built for temporary demands. Requirements for the backfilling materials, installation, and logistical boundary conditions are explained.</p>
