In Austria, thermal waste treatment in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plants is the dominant method for processing municipal solid waste (MSW), accounting for 86% of the total MSW treatment share. In this study, slag from a grate-fired MSWI plant was investigated. The material originates from mechanical processing in a mobile MSWI slag treatment plant and is subsequently landfilled at a site in Carinthia. Sampling was conducted immediately after mobile processing, which takes place directly at the landfill site, but prior to disposal. The samples underwent comminution using a jaw crusher, followed by sieving and magnetic separation. Due to the differing fracture characteristics of the metallic (ductile) and mineral (brittle) fractions, an increased degree of comminution enhances the liberation of mono-material particles. The liberated particles are predominantly magnetic, leading to a significant increase in the yield of the magnetic fraction. Furthermore, a differentiation between magnetic metallic and mineral fractions was achieved. The magnetic mineral fraction exhibits magnetic properties due to a high content of magnetite crystals. The separation of magnetic fractions was conducted both, by sieving (based on selective comminution properties) and by exploiting differences in magnetic susceptibility.
