<p>The aim of this study is to examine metallurgical remains from the hilltop settlement called Malleiten near Bad Fischau, Lower Austria, from the Early Iron Age or Hallstatt period (approx. 8th to 5th century BC). The hilltop settlement is associated with burial grounds.</p><p>Metallurgical slags of different appearances were examined. Cu-containing inclusions prove that these slags originate from Cu smelting. The inclusions show very different compositions, and Sb was also detected. The presence of Sb indicates that, among other Cu ores, fahlores were involved in the smelting process. Sb could also have entered the slag during the melting of casting cakes containing Cu-Sb or recycled material.</p><p>Due to the insufficient description of the slag find situation, no statements can be made about possible copper smelting in the area of the Malleiten settlement.</p>
