Vom Schwerpunktfach Geomatics for Mineral Resource Management zum Markscheider: Erfahrungen eines Jungabsolventen

The profession of the mine surveyor is of central importance for the collection, evaluation, and provision of mining-related geoinformation. In particular, it plays a crucial role in the fields of geodetic surveying, both in open-pit and underground mining, as well as in the preparation of operational plans and the associated tasks that ensure precise planning and execution of mining projects.
Since 2021, the master’s program “Geomatics for Mineral Resource Management” at the Montanuniversität Leoben has enabled the training of domestic mine surveyors who, after three years of practical work, can be recognized as responsible mine surveyors in Austria. This program provides in-depth knowledge in surveying technology and sensor systems, data processing, geoinformatics, geomodeling and mining subsidence.
This contribution provides a comprehensive insight into the study program, professional routine, and career prospects of a young mine surveyor. Some of the day-to-day tasks include drone surveys, monitoring and recording break walls, headings, and mining boundaries using laser scanning, monitoring mining damage and planning remedial measures, calculating, staking out, and surveying safe mining limits, as well as other interdisciplinary tasks in collaboration with engineers and geologists to maintain and secure underground structures and open-pit mines.
With an increasing technologization and complexity in mining, this profession is becoming increasingly important. It contributes significantly to the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of mining projects and is more necessary than ever today. The revival of the study program represents an important step for the training of surveyors, who will work in various fields such as engineering consulting, mining operations, mining authorities, or research and teaching in the future.
