Honey and beeswax production amidst climate variability in two contrasting agro-ecologies of Tanzania

Beekeeping sector faces various challenges including climate variability and extremes. This study was conducted in Njombe and Manyoni districts of Tanzania, with the aim to determine the impact of climate variability on honey and beeswax production. Climate data (rainfall and temperature) for the study sites were collected from Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), while production data were collected from Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS). Participatory research appraisal techniques were used to collect qualitative data on trends in climatic variables together with that of honey and beeswax production. Microsoft Excel and Statistical Product and Service Solution software were used to analyse quantitative and qualitative data. Temperature and rainfall variables showed no significant influence on honey and beeswax production in Njombe. In Manyoni, temperature showed a strong negative correlation with honey production, r= -0.82, (p = 0.004), df = 10. Temperature also showed a strong negative correlation with beeswax production in Manyoni, r= -0.84, (p = 0.002), df = 10. Regression analysis results showed that temperature significantly predicted honey production (p = 0.034, coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.734)) and beeswax production (p = 0.029, R2 = 0.741) only in Manyoni district. This study recommends effective extension services and provision of reliable climate information to increase beekeepers’ ability to adapt to the challenges faced.
