Influences of language-mediating neural networks on the physician–patient relationship
摘要
The article discusses the challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to mediate language in doctor–patient communication. If a physician and patient do not speak the same language, language mediation is essential to ensure adequate medical care. The absence of language mediation is an everyday problem in clinical practice. Given the present low threshold of availability, the use of AI for language mediation appears to be a rational choice. A key question is whether AI language mediation will have an impact on the doctor–patient relationship.
ArgumentThe design and operation of AI language models can influence communication between doctors and patients by giving rise to various technical phenomena. Users may have difficulty correctly identifying these influences. This has both legal and ethical implications for the use of AI. The dialogue between physicians and patients is evolving into a trialogue between physicians, AI, and patients. This establishes a relationship between physicians, AI, and patients that can impact diagnosis and treatment.
ConclusionAs users, physicians are called upon to actively engage with the implications of AI on the physicians–AI–patient relationship to meet the ethical demands of patient care. It is therefore necessary to consider adjustments to university education and medical training.
