摘要

Definition of the problem

Ethics case consultations are one of the central tasks ethics consultants need to master. Core competencies of an ethics consultant are listed in the training curriculum of the Academy for Ethics in Medicine, the professional association on ethical issues in medicine in Germany. These competencies include basic knowledge in the field of ethical principles and organisation, but also in counselling and facilitation. Field competence, i.e. familiarity with the respective clinical background, has not yet been taken into account. Similarly, the question of the significance of field competence for ethics case consultations and the extent to which it is supportive or even necessary for ethics consultants remains largely unanswered in the literature.

Arguments

This article addresses the topic, proposes a definition of field competence in the context of ethics case consultations and outlines considerations on its possible effects. It is concluded that field competence is relevant for the access, use and consultation process for ethics case consultations, and can be helpful and supportive for ethics consultants.

Summary

As a result, it is suggested that clinical field competence should be included in the training strategies for ethics consultants education. The paper then discusses how the relevant skills can be acquired. To this end, a concept that is based on a graded development of competence is presented and options for the acquisition of field competence in the training of ethics consultants is proposed.
