<p>The occurrence of fire foci in large urban municipalities like Rio de Janeiro (MRJ) presents a recurring environmental issue. This study provides a descriptive investigation into the dynamics of these fire foci, utilizing environmental satellite data to examine their association with atmospheric systems (South Atlantic Convergence Zone - SACZ and Frontal Systems - FS) and climatic variables (rainfall and air temperature). Descriptive statistics and exploratory trend analysis were applied to fire foci data (BDQueimadas), climatic variables (Alerta Rio System), and synoptic systems (Climanálise - CPTEC). Two distinct periods were analyzed, S1 (2001–2011) and S2 (2012–2016), with S2 exhibiting a notable increase in both air temperature and fire foci. The analysis suggests that the most critical period for the occurrence of fire foci in the MRJ coincides with the transition from the dry to the rainy season, particularly in August and September. A positive correlation was observed between fire foci and air temperatures, alongside a significant increase in temperature and a decrease in rainfall during S2, which suggests an increase in conditions conducive to fire. The results also indicated that fire foci showed stronger correlations with FS compared to SACZ, given that FS is the main mechanism responsible for generating rainfall during the dry season (winter). The study provides a baseline characterization of associations between anthropogenic factors, climate variability, and synoptic systems on fire occurrence patterns in MRJ. These findings can serve as an initial step toward informing fire risk management strategies in urban environments.</p>
