<p>The starting point for an analysis of humor in the field of tension between philosophy and psychoanalysis is the third season of the series <i>The White Lotus</i>. Using the tragicomic main character Rick Hatchett as an example, the interplay of wit, comedy and humor is examined in light of the philosophical and psychoanalytical interpretations described by Henri Bergson and Sigmund Freud. While Bergson interprets comedy as a&#xa0;rigid deviation from life, Freud emphasizes the role of the unconscious and the superego. Rick’s tragicomic journey to Thailand, driven by revenge and accompanied by his naive and loving girlfriend Chelsea, reveals a&#xa0;variety of comic mechanisms: from incongruity and exaggeration to social criticism and self-irony. The humor in the series fluctuates between relief, degradation and cathartic release. The final escalation undermines the humorous façade of the narrative with tragic force. The series thus shows that humor, in Freud’s sense, can be an act of psychological salvation that simultaneously deeply intervenes into social, familial and sexual conflicts.</p>
