<p>The perspective of Joseph Weiss on the patients and on the psychotherapeutic process is presented. Motivated by an unconscious healing plan, patients reactivate their pathogenic beliefs in the therapeutic relationship to test their validity (so-called testing). Following the presentation of the main tenets of the control-mastery theory (CMT), the reception of its assumptions by the psychoanalytical community is described. Based on this appreciation and criticism its concepts are ultimately located within the psychoanalytical theoretical framework. They are compared to and contrasted with related concepts such as transference, projective identification in its communicative function and enactment. The psychoanalytical character of CMT is highlighted.</p>
