<p>The Ramnad white sheep are farmed in state of Tamil Nadu, India, and are highly adapted to the ecological conditions, providing livelihood by way of meat, milk, skin, manure, etc., to thousands of rural landless laborers. Interdigital glands are special skin glands in sheep that play a crucial role in scent marking behavior and pheromone communication, as well as protecting the foot from UV-rays and fungal and bacterial infections. As there has not yet been research on the anatomy and histomorphology of these glands of this sheep breed, the present study examined the impact of sex and seasons on the morphology of the interdigital glands of Ramnad white sheep. A total of 40 interdigital glands were collected from male and female sheep from a slaughterhouse during breeding and non-breeding seasons for examination. Radiographic analysis revealed that the interdigital glands are located between the digits of both fore- and hind limbs, and shaped tobacco-pipe-like. In morphometric examination, the mean values of weight, length, and width of the gland varied significantly between male and female sheep. Histological analysis identified three distinct layers within the walls of the gland: (i) epidermis, consisting of keratinized squamous epithelium forming into stratum basale, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, etc.; (ii) dermis, consisting of sebaceous lobules, apocrine lobules, hair follicles, arrector pili muscles, etc.; and (iii) fibrous capsule, consisting of several parallel bundles of collagen fibers, nerve fibers, blood vessels, etc. Histochemical analysis revealed the sebaceous and apocrine secretions from this gland to react positively with alcian blue, periodic acid-Schiff, and Sudan black B, indicating the presence of glycosaminoglycans, glycoproteins, and lipoproteins, respectively. SEM analysis confirmed the interdigital gland to contain apocrine and sebaceous secretory components. Based on these anatomical, morphological and histological observations, we conclude that the Ramnad sheep possesses well-developed interdigital gland located on the corpus of the phalanx media between two toes in the fore- and hind feet, and contains apocrine and sebaceous secretory lobules.</p>
