Cuticular structures of the abdomen of Hippoboscoidea in the aspect of adaptation to viviparity and evolution

Hippoboscoidea is a specialized group of blood-sucking ectoparasite flies, that have a worldwide distribution and are vectors of many dangerous diseases both in mammals and birds. Of particular importance are their unique abdominal adaptations for the bloodsucking and development of larvae. Morphological peculiarities of male and female tergites in Glossinidae, Hippoboscidae, Streblidae and Nycteribiidae were studied. Analysis of abdominal cuticular structures superimposed on phylogenetic relationships, revealed a number of patterns, focused on a general decrease in the size and number of tergites. The female tergites are subject to the reduction, especially 3–7. Tergites 4 and 5, sometimes 7, are more reduced in males. Within the group of mammalian parasites, Melophagini have a more conservative abdominal structure. Analysis of the mtDNA CO1 gene sequences of the superfamily Hippoboscoidea revealed five clusters within three families (Hippoboscidae, Streblidae, Nycteribiidae) and Glossinidae as sister group. The time of divergence of genera of louse flies ranged from 32.0 to 8.6 Ma. Genetic distances between Glossinidae, Hippoboscidae, Streblidae and Nycteribiidae were almost identical and ranged from 15.9 to 20.2%.
