Effect of somatosensory games on arterial stiffness and antioxidant status in postmenopausal women

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 12-week somatosensory games on arterial stiffness, antioxidant enzyme activity, and lipid profiles in postmenopausal women.
MethodsA total of 28 postmenopausal women participated and were assigned to either the experimental group, which performed the ring fit adventure exergame (RFA, n = 14), or the control group, without the somatosensory game intervention (CON, n = 14). The RFA group performed the ring fit adventure exergame for 60 min per session, twice a week, for 12 weeks. The control group was instructed to maintain their usual lifestyle without any structured exercise intervention. During the study period, the pulse wave velocity (PWV), antioxidant enzyme activity, and lipid profiles were measured at baseline and at the end of the 12-week program.
ResultsAfter the 12-week intervention, the PWV in the RFA group was significantly lower compared with the CON group. The change levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were significantly higher compared with the CON group. The change level of cholesterol/HDL was significantly lower in the RFA group, when compared to the CON group.
ConclusionsThe results of this study suggest that 12-week somatosensory games might reduce arterial stiffness and increase HDL level and antioxidant capacity, contributing to reduced cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal women.
