摘要

Background

Nasolacrimal obstruction can present with epiphora, recurrent dacryocystitis and mucocele formation. Endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is an established approach in the surgical management of this condition, with a variety of techniques used to expose the nasolacrimal apparatus.

Method

This article introduces the Piezoelectric “Saw” as an effective alternative device for performing endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), with a description of the surgical approach.

Conclusion

Piezosurgery offers a convenient and precise new approach to safely exposing the nasolacrimal apparatus during an endonasal DCR. It offers the additional benefit of avoiding inadvertent nasal and nasolacrimal mucosal trauma during surgery. The authors commend its use for those surgeons routinely performing endonasal DCR procedures, observing benefits in the post-operative healing time and reduced presence of granulations on subsequent endoscopy.
