No association between alcohol consumption and androgenetic alopecia: a nested case-control study

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a common form of hair loss influenced by genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. Conflicting evidence suggests that lifestyle factors, including alcohol consumption, may be associated with AGA. A nested case-control study using the All of Us Research Program was conducted to assess for potential associations between alcohol consumption and AGA while adjusting for medical comorbidities and socioeconomic factors. Overall, 242 AGA patients and 2178 age-, sex-, and race-matched controls were analyzed. In unadjusted, medically adjusted, and medically and socioeconomically adjusted models, higher alcohol consumption was not significantly associated with increased odds of AGA (OR = 1.26[95%CI = 0.73–2.02], OR = 1.34[0.78–2.17], and OR = 1.00[0.57–1.64], respectively). AGA was independently associated with hyperlipidemia (OR = 1.59[1.14–2.24]) and thyroid disorders (OR = 2.05[1.25–3.27]), implicating shared hormonal and metabolic mechanisms. Higher education levels were associated with increased odds of AGA, potentially reflecting healthcare access, treatment-seeking, or lifestyle patterns. We found that alcohol consumption and AGA were not significantly associated, corroborating a growing body of prior research. Associations with hyperlipidemia and thyroid disorders highlight consideration of lifestyle, socioeconomic, and medical factors in AGA research. Prospective studies are needed to clarify modifiable risk factors.
