Evaluation of the effectiveness and safety of acupoint autohemotherapy in the treatment of atopic dermatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
摘要
Acupoint autohemotherapy is currently widely used clinically. This therapy is believed to effectively treat atopic dermatitis with a low recurrence rate, not make patients dependent, and have no toxic side effects. However, there is no authoritative literature on the exact mechanism of autohemotherapy, robust theoretical basis, or standardized guidelines for injection dosage and treatment duration. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of acupoint autohemotherapy in individuals with atopic dermatitis. The combination of MeSH terms with free terms was used for the search and was adjusted according to different databases. (e.g., “autohemotherapy”, “Atopic”). We collected randomized controlled trials (published from inception to August 30, 2022; English and Chinese) from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, WANFANG, and Vip. Comparing acupoint autohemotherapy to other atopic dermatitis treatments. The main endpoints were effective rate, relapse rate, EASI, VAS, and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) score (DLQI). Data were pooled by using Stata15 software. A total of 141 articles identified, 19 eligible articles with 1888 participants were meta-analyzed. Compared with other atopic dermatitis treatments, acupoint autohemotherapy had better efficacy in treating atopic dermatitis (relative risk [RR] 1.168, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.082–1.260) and reduced recurrence rate (RR 0.318, 95% CI 0.197–0.512). Furthermore, acupoint autohemotherapy could reduce the severity score of skin lesions in atopic dermatitis (EASI) by an average of 1.307 (95% CI − 2.188 to − 0.426), the itch severity score (VAS) by an average of 0.298 (95% CI − 0.585 to − 0.010), and DLQI score by an average of 1.407 (95% CI − 2.778 to − 0.036). In terms of safety profile, nine studies recorded adverse reactions, of which six studies showed no adverse reactions and three studies demonstrated transient adverse reactions. The symptoms disappeared spontaneously without discontinuation of treatment. In conclusion, based on data from China’s health care system, this study reveals that acupoint autohemotherapy is safe and can effectively improve the symptoms of atopic dermatitis, lower the degree of pruritus, improve the quality of life, and reduce the recurrence rate. Thus this therapy is worth popularizing.
