<p>Acne vulgaris is a prevalent and persistent inflammatory skin disease that manifests through the appearance of comedones, inflammatory papules, pustules, and nodulocystic lesions. While it can affect individuals across the lifespan, its occurrence is notably higher in adolescents and young adults. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a significant neurotrophin present in the human brain, plays an important role in neuronal development, proliferation, synaptic communication, and neuroplasticity. Vitamin D receptors are present in a wide distribution of tissues and cells throughout the body, including the brain. Serum levels of vitamin D have been evaluated in several dermatological diseases. The present study aims to assess serum levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (serum BDNF) and 25-hydroxy vitamin D in correlation with disease activity in acne vulgaris patients. Forty-five patients with acne vulgaris were compared to forty-five age- and sex-matched individuals as a control group. Serum BDNF and vitamin D were assessed for all subjects (patients and controls) using ELISA technique. Statistically significant decreases in serum BDNF and vitamin D were observed in the patient group when compared with the control group. Serum levels of BDNF and vitamin D were significantly decreased in patients with acne vulgaris. BDNF appears to be a better indicator than vitamin D in the evaluation of psychological symptoms and depression associated with acne, as BDNF was significantly correlated with acne severity, quality of life, and depression in acne patients.</p>
