<p>In terms of content and space, hospitals occupy a&#xa0;central place in our built environment. When planning these healthcare buildings, we place the needs of patients at the center with the aim of creating “healing architecture”. It is equally important to focus on the medical and nursing personnel. In view of the high demand for specialized personnel, they must be shown particular appreciation. Architects bear the responsibility for functional and comfortably equipped workplaces, short distances between functional units and atmospherically pleasant rooms and we call this “built appreciation”. The construction industry in general and highly installed hospital construction in particular, are among the biggest consumers of resources and energy. Refurbishments of existing buildings score highly in terms of sustainability as the grey energy already used here continues to be used. In the case of new buildings, it is essential to ensure a&#xa0;high degree of flexibility and the possibility of subsequent refurbishment during hospital operation. The aspects of patient needs, personnel requirements and sustainability are highlighted using three built examples.</p>
