<p>The pericardium is an important anatomical landmark for cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. Detailed knowledge of the anatomy and morphology of the pericardium is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of associated diseases. Pericardial tamponade in particular requires a rapid diagnosis and treatment. Constrictive pericarditis as a&#xa0;cause of diastolic heart failure, can be successfully treated by surgical pericardiectomy. Tumors of the pericardium and pericardial cysts are comparatively rare and do not always require immediate surgical treatment. This article provides an overview of the relevant pericardial diseases and their treatment options.</p>
