Synthesis of opal films through the ordering of polymeric latex particles induced by functionalized carbon nanofibers

We report a novel synthetic strategy to obtain photonic films through the self-assembly of polymeric core–shell particles onto functionalized carbon nanofibers (CNFs-F). Driven by the interfacial compatibility among the components, the particles adhere to the nanofibers’ surface promoting highly ordered latex particles (LP) that form opal films (OF) with minimal defects. In contrast, litmus films obtained from single core–shell latex particles (OF-L) show an arrangement in small domains randomly oriented. CNFs-F-based opal films emit a green coloration with an incidence angle of visible light (IAVL) of 90°. Meanwhile, a blue coloration is observed at an angle of 45°, an optical effect characteristic of green films, also called Ogreen.
