Record-breaking co-occurred heatwaves in the East China Sea and continent in summer 2022

In the hot summer of 2022, the East China Sea coast experienced an unprecedented co-occurrence of marine heatwaves (MHWs) and terrestrial heatwaves (THWs) with severe ecological and socio-economic impacts. However, the characteristics and drivers of the co-occurred heatwaves (CO-HWs) are still unknown. Here, we found that the CO-HW total days and intensity in the East China Sea and its coastal area reached historical maxima in the summer of 2022 due to anomalous atmospheric circulation caused by sea surface temperature anomalies in the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Compared with stand-alone MHWs or THWs, CO-HWs exhibited stronger intensity but shorter duration. The CO-HWs were primarily attributed to enhanced solar shortwave radiation, linked to the anomalous westward extension and reinforcement of the West Pacific Subtropical High. Over the past four decades, the CO-HWs have become more frequent and severe in this region under global warming. Our results indicate CO-HWs could become a “new normal” along the East China Sea coast.
