Late Pliocene lacustrine deposits expose the nonlinear response of the East Asian summer monsoon to insolation forcing

Middle-Late Pleistocene millennial-scale climate variability (MSCV, i.e., 1–15 kyr periodicities) is widely documented in the marine deposits. However, little is known about whether terrestrial climates were affected by MSCV during the late Pliocene. Here, we present a high-resolution magnetic susceptibility (χlf) record from the Sanmenxia Basin in northern China that spans from 3.03 to 2.59 Ma. We document relatively strong half-precession (~ 10 kyr) and quarter-precession (~ 5.5 kyr) cycles marked by an amplitude modulation that is in lockstep with the precession cycle. These findings suggest a link between climate changes in northern China and low-latitude and/or local insolation. We also document other quasi-periodic millennial-scale variations with periodicities < 10 kyr that probably resulted from nonlinear interactions among climate cycles (i.e., combination tones), and/or from variations in solar activity. Our findings mark the prevalence of MSCV in terrestrial records during the Late Pliocene and highlight the nonlinear interactions inherent to Earth’s climate system that cause MSCV.
