Enhancing Energy Conservation Behaviors Through Audio, Visual, and Social Cues in Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) environments offer a novel medium for raising awareness and promoting pro-environmental behaviors such as energy conservation. This study investigates the effectiveness of three intervention methods—periodic audio announcements, visually appealing two-dimensional posters, and social cues from non-player characters (NPCs)—in influencing energy conservation behaviors within a VR simulation of an indoor office environment. Sixty participants completed pre- and post-exposure assessments using a pro-environmental behavior (PEB) questionnaire, which evaluated cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions. Results indicate that all interventions positively impacted participants’ affective and cognitive understanding of energy conservation.
