<p>This review article addresses the central problem that although the vitreous body constitutes approximately 80% of the ocular volume, it can often only be insufficiently clinically assessed due to its transparency. This article therefore emphasizes the necessity for improved diagnostic methods to be able to make a better assessment of the actual role of the vitreous body in health and disease.</p>
