Mitigating Salinity Stress in Citrus aurantiifolia via Strigolactone and γ-Aminobutyric Acid Applications

Salinity stress limits the productivity, fruit quality, and physiological performance of lime (Citrus aurantiifolia) trees; however, limited information is available regarding the application of strigolactone (SL) and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) for improving salinity tolerance in citrus. Therefore, the present study investigated the individual and combined effects of foliar-applied SL (10 µM) and GABA (50 mM) on yield, fruit quality, mineral balance, water relations, oxidative stress, antioxidant defense system, and phytohormonal responses of lime trees grown under saline conditions during two consecutive seasons. Significant treatment effects were observed for all studied parameters under saline conditions. The combined SL + GABA treatment consistently resulted in improved physiological and productive performance compared with untreated saline trees, increasing relative water content by approximately 18% and 29% across the two seasons. It also reduced the Na⁺/K⁺ ratio, and increased fruit yield by approximately 23% and 59% in the first and second seasons, respectively. In addition, all treatments, particularly the combined application, enhanced chlorophyll content, fruit set, fruit retention, fruit quality attributes, nutrient uptake, proline accumulation, and antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, POD, and CAT), while reducing electrolyte leakage, hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and ABA levels relative to untreated saline trees. These findings suggest that SL and GABA applications improve physiological performance, fruit productivity, and stress-associated metabolic responses in lime trees grown under saline conditions.
