Halo-Tolerant Phosphate-Solubilising Bacterium from Coral Reef: A Potential Bioagent for Phosphate Reclamation and Soil Fertility Enhancement

The present study focuses on deploying a multifarious phosphate solubilising bacterium (Cronobacter muytjensii) from the coral reef environment for enhancing saline-soil fertility and plant growth promotion under high saline conditions. C. muytjensii potentially solubilises phosphate at pH levels up to 9 and salinity up to 40 psu, with the maximum solubilization recorded at pH-8 and salinity-35 psu. Production of gluconic acid, oxalic acid, formic acid, malonic acid, keto-gluconic acid and citric acid by C. muytjensii was observed. The strain also produces phosphatase (89 U/ml) and phytase enzymes. C. muytjensii exhibited proficient production of IAA, nitrogen fixation, potassium solubilisation (SI—3.2), production of hydrolytic enzymes (Urease, cellulase and catalase). The strain exhibited effectual antagonistic activities against various phyto-fungal strains. The strain C. muytjensii significantly reduced soil pH, increased available phosphorus and enhanced the growth of rice, tomato and chilli plants. Based on the results, we conclude that C. muytjensii demonstrates multifarious potential to utilise deposited phosphates in the soil and act as a biocontrol agent under saline-stress conditions.
