Sunflower Plant Growth Inside the Greenhouse as Affected by Different Soil Types Affected by Sodium Chloride Salinity

This study aims to evaluate the extent of the effect of salty irrigation water and the drought factor as parameters on the growth and development of cultivated oil sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L.) through estimating and analyzing important physical, chemical and biological parameters associated with the soil–Plant-Water–air system. A field experiment was conducted in a greenhouse to evaluate the effect of sodium chloride on the growth of oil sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) plants. We used five (5) irrigation water samples with different molar concentrations; it ranges from 0 to 200 mmol/L, using the same soil type in all cases and under the same environmental conditions. The results showed that the relative growth rate and percentage of dry biological weight of the studied sunflower plants were positively affected in the case of very low concentrations of sodium chloride in irrigation water. However, they were negatively affected in varying proportions in the rest of the other cases. This experiment also demonstrated that severe drought is a negative factor for the growth of this type of this plant. The chemical elements contained in both soil and irrigation water had positive and negative effects depending on the proportions of these elements. Despite the high degree of salinity, this type of sunflower was able to tolerate it, but with a relatively low yield.
