BI-1-HEM1 Condensates Autophagy Drives Disease Resistance

Disease tolerance is a crucial trait that ensures plant health. The endoplasmic reticulum serves as a hub for cellular interactions responsible for plant disease tolerance. Tang et al. showed that HEM-1 protein (hematopoietic protein-1) interacts with BI-1 protein (Bax-inhibitor gene-1), leading to the formation of a condensate in the endoplasmic reticulum upon pathogen invasion. Notably, the HEM-1 and BI-1 condensate is degraded by ATG6 (autophagy-related gene) protein, leading to the activation of plant immunity and resistance against invading pathogens. The outcome of this research could be focused on manipulating the HEM-1/BI-1/ATG6 signaling axis to improve plant disease tolerance. Furthermore, understanding and engineering this ER-based condensate degradation pathway could provide promising opportunities for developing crops with improved immunity and resilience to pathogen attacks.
