摘要

Stomata and trichomes are specialized plant structures that develop from the epidermis and are vital to how a plant interacts with its surroundings. In this study, we investigated stomatal and trichome phenotypes of two contrasting guar [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.] varieties, Sarada, a comparatively sensitive and RGC-1038, a better drought tolerant, were subjected to 10 days of drought. We performed comparative analyses at morphological and physiological levels of plants grown under watered and watered-deficit conditions. Under water deficit conditions, we found comparatively higher trichome density and smaller size of stomata in RGC-1038 than Sarada compared with well-watered grown plants. The stomata and trichome density were positively correlated with WUE, indicating an important role in drought tolerance in cluster bean. The ratio of stomata and trichomes, in both the guar varieties, enabled them to maintain a steady water level for better survival in water-stressed conditions.
