<p>The synergistic effect of indium (In) and neodymium (Nd) alloying on the corrosion behavior of Mg-6 wt.% Al-3 wt.% Zn magnesium alloy (AZ63) was investigated using electrochemical techniques and surface analysis. Results indicate that there was a competitive generating mechanism between Al<sub>2</sub>Nd and β-Mg<sub>17</sub>Al<sub>12</sub> intermetallic phases. The corrosion products were apt to detach from the surface of the magnesium matrix after Nd alloying, whereas the alloying of In led to great defects in the corrosion product film, exposing more Mg matrix to contact with the electrolyte. After that, a comparative confined space formed beneath the corrosion product layer facilitated the dissolution-reprecipitation effect aroused by In for corrosion promotion.</p>
