A wideband transmission-reflection polarization converter with high polarization isolation and low loss

This paper proposes a transmission-reflection reconfigurable polarization converter, which comprises perpendicular grating layers and a single layer of active polarization conversion metasurface (PCM). The latter incorporates cross-typed structures integrated with PIN diodes. The manipulation of the diodes states enables dynamic switching between polarization maintaining (PM) in reflection mode and line-to-line (LTL) polarization conversion in transmission mode. To verify the design, a prototype consisting of 21◊21unit cells has been fabricated and subjected to rigorous measurements. The experimental results agreed well with the simulation ones. The experimental data reveals an overlapping band of 1.39–3.54 GHz for LTL polarization conversion and PM, achieving a fractional bandwidth of 87.2%, with both insertion loss (IL) remaining below 1dB throughout. Furthermore, the proposed converter demonstrates high polarization isolation (PI) values of 30dB in transmission mode and 40 dB in reflection mode, which is sufficient for most antenna operations. The proposed polarizer addresses the mutual constraints between bandwidth, PI and IL in the polarization modulation process to some extent. It represents an advancement in the field of polarization manipulation and has potential applications in wireless communication and radar detection systems.
