<p>The Journal Impact Factor is a&#xa0;calculated measure for journals that is intended to represent the importance of a&#xa0;publication in the academic community. Apart from the ranking of journals, the summation of the JIF or indices derived from it is the only real “currency” in the academic world, apart from the h‑index. Grants for academic work, chances of being appointed to a&#xa0;professorship and many other things depend on the JIF. The JIF is calculated from the number of citations recorded for a&#xa0;journal in the last 2&#xa0;calendar years in relation to the number of citable articles of the last 2&#xa0;calendar years of a&#xa0;journal. A&#xa0;critical aspect is the data records that can be produced through this recording of virtually all academically relevant persons worldwide and the market power of the consortium that carries out the calculation, namely Clarivate Analytics. If a&#xa0;journal loses the coveted JIF, it usually disappears into insignificance for the publication of study results.</p>
