<p>This study examines the criteria used in the selection and use of wood at the pre-Hispanic settlement of La Calavera in the lower Paraná region, through analysis of the charcoal remains. La Calavera, associated with the Goya-Malabrigo archaeological entity, was a settlement where various domestic activities took place. A total of 559 charred wood remains from the site were analysed and 447 (79.96%) were identified as 21 plant taxa, with <i>Nectandra</i> sp. (<i>laurel de río</i>), <i>Salix</i> sp. (<i>sauce criollo</i>) and <i>Neltuma</i> sp. (<i>algarrobo</i>) being the most abundant. For <i>Nectandra</i> and <i>Salix</i>, the wood procurement strategy relied on the collection of fallen dead branches less than 5&#xa0;cm thick. The high frequencies of <i>Neltuma</i> in earlier stratigraphic levels associated with burning areas could suggest that it is associated with the creation or use of these areas or maybe the initial occupation of the levee, considering the depth of these levels. The findings show the potential of quantitative investigative methods to analyse the thicknesses represented by the charcoal remains and to understand the ways in which woody resources were obtained and used in the region.</p>
