A new species of the eelpout genus Ophthalmolycus (Zoarcidae) from the Cosmonauts Sea, off East Antarctica
摘要
A new species of eelpout genus Ophthalmolycus (Zoarcidae) is described based on two specimens collected from the Cosmonauts Sea, Southern Ocean. The new species has low (< 100) number of vertebrae and can be distinguished from other congeners by the ventrolateral configuration of its lateral line. This character is rare among eelpouts and inherent only for few species of another genus, Lycodes. The new species is the sixth representative of Ophthalmolycus found in the Antarctic. The increased number of Ophthalmolycus species suggests relatively high levels of eelpouts speciation, which may have been driven by the cooling of high-latitude oceans during the Cenozoic.
