Abrupt greening observed since 2020 at Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica

The Antarctic Peninsula is a complex mountainous glacier system with thousands of glaciers flowing and draining on both sides. Increasing temperatures have been recorded in this area over the last few decades, with a much greater increase rate observed since about 1980. The common effects observed such as diminishing icefields, thinning glaciers and ice caps, are exposing new rocky areas of land which are gradually being colonized by vegetation. One of the main tools to observe these processes is the use of remote sensing data and multispectral analyses and indexes to follow the responses of the environment associated with the observed variation of climatic parameters, such as for the use of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). NDVI and Ice Cover data of the study area were derived from level 2 products of LANDSAT 4/5, LANDSAT 7, and LANDSAT 8 missions from where the Near InfraRed and Red bands were combined and analyzed together with climatic parameters. Our results suggest the expansion of green areas with an 6.581-fold increase of area in a 33 years timespan around Admiralty Bay, in King George Island. We observed the correlation between the temperature and precipitation along the studied timespan, although no significant change in ice extent was noted during the same period, therefore suggesting that the observed greening in the Antarctic Peninsula is not related uniquely with the colonization of new ice-free areas, but also with the enhanced capabilities of the actual plant community to successfully colonize previously exposed areas.
