In vivo biocompatibility and biodegradability of antimicrobial cellulose acetate films with geranyl acetate

There is a growing interest in using biomaterials with antimicrobial properties that interact and incorporate into the organism to regenerate live tissues. Among these materials, cellulose acetate films incorporated with geranyl acetate (CAFGA) exhibit antimicrobial properties and are being investigated for their applications. In this study, the biocompatibility of CAFGA was evaluated through in vivo testing. CAFGA scaffolds containing 0.5% and 1.0% (v/v) geranyl acetate were implanted subcutaneously in immunocompetent Wistar rats. After 7 and 21 days, histological analyses of the implanted tissue were performed. The hydrolytic degradation test was performed by in vitro assays, in a simulated physiological fluid medium (phosphate-buffered saline, pH 7.4), over a period of 60 days. The results showed that the CAFGA did not cause any tissue damage in the animals and was not degraded over the days after implantation. Additionally, it was also observed that CAFGA did not have any significant mass loss during the hydrolytic degradation test, and the geranyl acetate was not released to test medium. Therefore, the results demonstrate that CAFGA are stable and biocompatible materials when used in animals.
