<p>A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, immotile and aerobic bacterial strain, designated as SYSU BS000544<sup>T</sup>, was isolated from a black soil sample in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SYSU BS000544<sup>T</sup> belongs to the genus <i>Brevibacillus</i>, and showed the highest sequence similarity to <i>Brevibacillus ginsengisoli</i> KCTC 13938<sup>T</sup> (98.09%). Strain SYSU BS000544<sup>T</sup> was found to grow at 25–37&#xa0;°C (optimum, 30&#xa0;°C) and pH 6.0–7.0 (optimum, pH 6.5) and in the presence of 0% (w/v) NaCl. Polar lipids comprised of phosphophatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminophospholipid, and two unidentified polar lipids. The major cellular fatty acids (&gt; 5%) were iso-C<sub>17:1</sub> <i>ω</i>9<i>c</i> and/or 10-methyl C<sub>16:0</sub>, iso-C<sub>16:0</sub>, iso-C<sub>17:0</sub>, iso-C<sub>14:0</sub> and anteiso-C<sub>15:0</sub>. The predominant respiratory quinone was MK-7. The genomic G + C content was 48.84% based on the whole genome analysis. The average nucleotide identity (≤ 78.88%) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (≤ 15.7%) values between strain SYSU BS000544<sup>T</sup> and other members of the genus <i>Brevibacillus</i> were all lower than the threshold values recommended for distinguishing novel species. Based on the results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses, strain SYSU BS000544<sup>T</sup> represents a novel species of the genus <i>Brevibacillus</i>, for which the name <i>Brevibacillus nigriterrae</i> sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SYSU BS000544<sup>T</sup> (= MCCC 1K09332<sup>T</sup> = KCTC 43752<sup>T</sup>).</p>
