<p>The significance of many concepts in psychology, psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine has undergone an astonishing expansion in recent decades. They now encompass a&#xa0;much broader spectrum of phenomena than before. This applies primarily to concepts that refer to negative aspects of human experiences and behavior, whereby the semantic expansion is characterized by the inclusion of both qualitatively new and quantitatively less severe phenomena. This semantic expansion is illustrated using the example of the now inflationary term “trauma”. In addition to the progressive psychologization of society in general (therapy culture), victimization in particular should be discussed as a&#xa0;cause. With the described expansion of the concept, behavior can be declared harmful and more people can be identified as harmed, which can lead to the expansion and optimization of care services. On the other hand, harmless experiences can be pathologized, vulnerability strengthened and victim identities promoted.</p>
