<p>In their daily work in the prison system, social therapy professionals support convicted offenders and are therefore exposed to detailed descriptions of violence. The fact that occupational confrontation with trauma can lead to trauma-specific stress reactions in professionals, in short secondary traumatization, has been widely documented in the literature. The aim of this empirical study was to analyze the occupational and trauma stress but also the posttraumatic growth of the professionals. A total of <i>n</i> = 62 social therapy specialists in the Bavarian prison system were analyzed. The survey was conducted using the Secondary Traumatization Questionnaire, the Secondary Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, the Mini Symptom Checklist and the short version of the Sense of Coherence Scale. The results show that 19% exhibit moderate to severe (5%) secondary trauma symptoms. Of the professionals 92% suffer from intrusive experiences as a&#xa0;result of the trauma descriptions they have heard and 49% experience an increased need for safety. Psychological stress is significantly increased in 78%, with this being very pronounced in as many as 23%. Despite the degree of stress, posttraumatic growth is also evident, with 36% even experiencing strong growth. Last but not least, the sense of coherence was once again confirmed as a&#xa0;protective factor against secondary trauma stress. Considerations for the penal system are suggested.</p>
