摘要

Background

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors are common in adolescents.

Objective

What interventions are used by child and adolescent psychotherapists in dealing with acute or persistent suicidality in children and adolescents? Which diagnostic instruments are used by child and adolescent psychotherapists in cases of suicidal thoughts and behavior in children and adolescents?

Material and methods

In this study, 40 child and adolescent psychotherapists completed a self-developed questionnaire on interventions and instruments for suicidal thoughts and behaviors based on a comprehensive literature review.

Results

In acute suicidal thoughts and behaviors, a safety plan (mean, M = 94.13, standard deviation, SD± 11.32) and a risk assessment (M = 91.55, SD± 15.77) are most frequently used. In the treatment of children and adolescents with persistent suicidal thoughts and behaviors, psychoeducation on suicidal thoughts and behavior (M = 85.58, SD± 20.89), emotion regulation training/skills training, (M = 84.61, SD± 17.73), risk assessment (M = 81.60, SD± 25.68), resource promotion (M = 81.50, SD± 19.02), and safety planning (M = 81.00, SD± 30.61) are used most frequently. Free exploration and broadband questionnaires are predominantly used to assess suicidality.

Conclusion

Child and adolescent psychotherapists use several interventions for children and adolescents with suicidal thoughts and behaviors and follow the guidelines in the choice of interventions.
