Facial scanning in medicine and plastic surgery: a comprehensive review of AI-driven and conventional imaging technologies

Facial scanning and imaging technologies, such as stereophotogrammetry, cone-beam computed tomography, and optical coherence tomography, have rapidly advanced and are increasingly integrated into diverse medical specialties, including aesthetics, oncology, orthodontics, and neuropsychiatry. This review summarizes recent innovations in facial scanning tools across several medical disciplines and discusses the broad range of applications of these technologies, especially when paired with advanced software platforms. The utilization of facial scanners was found to be most common for aesthetic evaluation of the face, facial symmetry evaluation, malignancy detection, monitoring soft tissue changes following surgery, and recording surgical measurements. Broader uses of these tools include predicting facepiece respirator fit and the evaluation of macular edema. This review highlights the increasing potential of facial scanning technologies to improve both clinical practice and patient outcomes by providing easily accessible, relevant clinical data.
