Latitudinal patterns of reproduction in the intertidal mussel Mytilisepta virgata along the coast of China

Elucidating the reproductive pattern of a species along the latitudinal gradient is crucial for understanding its ecological constraints and population replenishment capability. For the first time, this study assessed the latitudinal pattern of reproduction of the mussel Mytilisepta virgata, a foundation species along the subtropical and tropical coasts of the Indo-West Pacific, at four coastal sites in China by using histological examination and biometric measurements. Our results showed the spawning season, gonadosomatic index (GSI), condition index (CI), and total reproductive potential (TRP) were variable among mussels from different geographic populations. Mussels at lower latitudes exhibited lower reproductive capacity, which was related to more intensive thermal stress and less food availability. Additionally, females exhibited consistently lower GSI, CI, and TRP than males, indicating that the reproduction of females would be more vulnerable to environmental changes. These findings are fundamental for understanding the latitudinal reproductive patterns of the mussel and their future distribution patterns.
