Growth promotion of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) by fungal volatile organic compounds isolated from orchard soils

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and volatile metabolites emitted by microorganisms is of major significance in enhancing plant growth and controlling harmful microorganisms; however, our understanding of these factors remain limited. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to collect new fungal strains from orchard rhizosphere soil and determine the role of VOCs emitted by these strains. We conducted a two-compartment plate assay in a controlled environment to assess the potential of the fungal strains to stimulate plant growth by emitting VOCs. We observed that different fungal strains released various VOCs and demonstrated their ability to promote plant growth by releasing VOCs in the shared atmosphere. Exposure to VOCs emitted by Mortierella spp. and Curvularia spp., significantly enhanced lettuce growth in the presence of CO2 granules, compared to the control group, which lacked fungal isolates. Spectrometric analysis showed that Mortierella spp. and Curvularia spp. released 33 VOCs, including N-nonadecanol, 2-pentene 2,3-dimethyl, decane, nonane, phenylethyl alcohol, 3-penten-2-one, 4-methyl, and butanoic acid. The fungal strains isolated from the orchard rhizosphere soil produced multiple VOCs, and their emissions positively influenced lettuce plant growth.
