<p>The probability of pole-to-ground (PTG) faults in multiterminal DC (MTDC) distribution systems is very high, and the grounding mode has a significant impact on interrupting burden of DC circuit breakers (DCCBs). By analyzing the interrupting performance of DCCB with different grounding modes, a foundation for the selection of appropriate grounding modes for MTDC distribution systems is provided. In this paper, a number of grounding modes of MTDC distribution systems are compared. The interrupting current, absorbed energy, fault isolation time of DCCB and current in energy absorption branch are calculated. The interrupting performance of DCCB is studied during the open-close-open (O–C–O) process. The key parameters during the first and the second interrupting processes of DCCB are compared. The results indicate that grounded by star-point reactor (SPR) is a preferred grounding mode from the perspective of interrupting the DC fault current. Finally, the effect of grounding mode of no-adjacent converter station on interrupting performance is studied. It suggests that grounded by SPR decreases the fault current feeding to the DCCB, it is advantage for the second interruption of DCCB if DCCB recloses a permanent fault.</p>
