Background <p>The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being discussed as a&#xa0;supportive tool in forensic expert assessment; however, specific recommendations for the professionally appropriate, legally permissible and ethically responsible use in the preparation of forensic expert reports are still lacking.</p> Objective <p>The aim of this study is to identify key challenges associated with the use of AI in the preparation of forensic expert reports and, on this basis, to develop practical recommendations for the responsible use of AI applications.</p> Methodological approach <p>This article constitutes the second part of a&#xa0;multistage project. It builds on the results of a&#xa0;survey of forensic experts working in legal medicine and combines these findings with an analysis of relevant ethical, legal and technical frameworks.</p> Results <p>A&#xa0;total of seven recommendations are proposed that address the selection and assessment of suitability of AI tools, the permissible scope of their use, the independent quality control of AI-generated content, transparency regarding AI use, the protection of sensitive data, issues of responsibility and liability and the need for adequate AI literacy and training. The use of AI in areas that encroach upon the core expert function is discussed as particularly problematic.</p> Discussion <p>At present, the use of AI in the preparation of forensic expert reports appears justifiable primarily for supportive tasks. The more strongly AI influences the evaluation of findings and the answering of the question at issue, the higher the professional, legal and ethical requirements become.</p>

Background

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being discussed as a supportive tool in forensic expert assessment; however, specific recommendations for the professionally appropriate, legally permissible and ethically responsible use in the preparation of forensic expert reports are still lacking.

Objective

The aim of this study is to identify key challenges associated with the use of AI in the preparation of forensic expert reports and, on this basis, to develop practical recommendations for the responsible use of AI applications.

Methodological approach

This article constitutes the second part of a multistage project. It builds on the results of a survey of forensic experts working in legal medicine and combines these findings with an analysis of relevant ethical, legal and technical frameworks.

Results

A total of seven recommendations are proposed that address the selection and assessment of suitability of AI tools, the permissible scope of their use, the independent quality control of AI-generated content, transparency regarding AI use, the protection of sensitive data, issues of responsibility and liability and the need for adequate AI literacy and training. The use of AI in areas that encroach upon the core expert function is discussed as particularly problematic.
