摘要

Background

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based methods are increasingly being used in forensic research; however, little is known about the use of AI applications in forensic practice, particularly in the preparation of forensic expert reports.

Objective

The aim of this study was to assess whether and to what extent AI applications are being used in forensic medicine for the preparation of expert reports and to identify opinions, questions, and concerns about an AI use.

Material and methods

In December 2025 an online survey was sent to members of the German Society of Legal Medicine (DGRM). The questionnaire consisted of either 21 or 12 questions depending on whether participants reported prior use of AI. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and structured qualitative content analysis.

Results

A total of 97 questionnaires were analyzed. Of the participants, 46.4% (n = 45) reported past utilization of AI for the preparation of an expert report and ChatGPT was most frequently used tool (84.4%). AI Applications were mainly used for research (51.1%), assistance with wording (46.7%), and grammar or spelling (44.4%). Few participants reported using AI tools to generate (parts of) expert reports. The most commonly reported advantages were saving time, easier literature research and support with style and structure. Reported disadvantages included AI-related errors, the need for content verification and uncertainties regarding data security and liability.

Conclusion

Forensic medical experts seem open to using AI in the preparation of expert reports. At the same time, concerns were expressed regarding data protection and liability. Furthermore, there was a demand for AI-related training and guidelines that clearly define the framework for using AI in forensic expert reporting.
