Präzision von 3D-Druck-Modellen bei knöchernen Schussdefekten – Pilotstudie

The use of 3D imaging and 3D printing has become increasingly more important in forensic applications over the last decade. The accuracy of 3D models has generally been little studied, especially when using low-cost 3D printers.
Material and methodsIn this study three bone specimens with bone defects were scanned with micro-computed tomography (CT) and the resulting 3D models were printed with three different 3D printers. The printed models were then scanned again with the micro-CT and compared with the original specimens. Both quantitative and qualitative aspects were taken into account.
Results and discussionThe results show an overall very good match between the printed models and the original specimens, with marginal deviations within the error tolerance of the anthropological measurements. The visual analysis generally shows a good representation of the morphology, while losses are recognizable in the texture and the fine representation of fracture lines. In summary, it can be said that the printers used produced sufficiently good results.
