Der Gewalt auf der Spur
摘要
Adequate care for victims of violence presents diverse challenges for both law enforcement agencies and the healthcare system. For the quality of forensic care, early detection and court-admissible documentation of the consequences of violence are paramount. For this purpose, the study uses a criminalistic triage instrument for the detection and categorization of victims of violence, which was developed by the first author in 2022.
Research questionHow can the detection of violent crimes by the police be improved while simultaneously scientifically standardizing the involvement of forensic medicine in the early phase of the investigation process?
Materials and methodsProspective data were collected in the form of a controlled online survey with vignette experiments at two German police universities with a total of 63 students, divided into a test and a control group. The vignettes were created based on scenarios from forensic routine.
ResultsThere were significant differences in the teaching of forensic medical content within the study programs and police training at the two participating academies. The use of a triage instrument led to a reliable detection of relevant criminal offenses and, in the test group, to a partially significant increase in the involvement of forensic medicine in the investigation process (statistically confirmed using Fisher’s exact test). Even rudimentary forensic medical knowledge and operational experience had a generally positive effect on the quality of the initial forensic assessment in the experiment.
ConclusionThe widespread application of a standardized set of criteria could contribute to improved detection of violent crimes by the first-responding police forces. Increased and, above all, earlier involvement of forensic medicine in police investigations, especially in complex and serious violent crimes, can positively influence the course of proceedings.
